WATCH: Melania Trump Speaks on Capitol Hill
First lady Melania Trump on Monday went to Capitol Hill to put her support behind a bill that would make illegal the publishing of so-called deepfake pornography and "non-consensual intimate imagery."
"We must prioritize robust security measures and uphold strict ethical standards to protect individual privacy," the first lady told reporters as part of a larger event that included a roundtable discussion on the issue.
Others that joined the first lady included Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz and Elliston Berry, a 15-year-old high school student who was a victim of deepfake pornography.
Her remarks were the first in public since husband President Trump returned as president in January.
The bill, the "Take It Down Act," is being sponsored by Cruz and has bipartisan support from such members of the Democratic congressional caucus as Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota, and Rep. Madeleine Dean, Pennsylvania, according to Fox News.
"The widespread presence of abusive behavior in the digital domain affects the daily lives of our children, families and communities," the first lady also said.
"Addressing this issue is essential for fostering a safe and supportive environment for young people."
This is the first time Melania has made public remarks since her husband returned to office.
